Did you know the month of April is all about celebrating our Mother Earth? The very first Earth Day dated back to the 1970s and took place on April 22. Since then, Earth Day has become a global movement, and over 1 billion people participate, bringing awareness to the issues our planet faces.
This is a chance for everyone to appreciate our planet and take care of it. However, being environmentally conscious one day out of 365 is not enough to make a difference. We should take this month to educate those around us about how we can improve our daily habits and incorporate a more sustainable lifestyle. - This year marks the 52nd anniversary of Earth Day!
- Earth Day is held every year on April 22. Senator Nelson chose this day because it fell between Spring Break and final exams, and organizers wanted to maximize student involvement.
- According to EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), the first Earth Day in 1970 influenced the passage of clean air, clean water, and endangered species acts.
- Earth Day was initially referred to as Ecology Day, Ecology Drive, Environment Day, and E-Day. Some also call it International Mother Earth Day.
- Earth Day has a theme song.
- Earth Day was the largest demonstration in U.S. history.
As of 2019, Earth Day has become Earth Day Canada, expanding its programs from coast to coast. - Earth Day Canada, which has operated year-round since 1990, has developed dozens of programs mobilizing businesses, municipalities, and citizens.

How You Can Celebrate Earth Day
- Use reusable containers and ditch any single-use items
- Plant a tree, flowers or shrubs! You can do this on your own or join an organization that facilitates it
- Pick up trash in your local neighbourhood
- Use your compost as fertilizer for your garden
- Educate yourself, and those around you about the impacts our actions make
- Instead of buying new clothes, try finding your fashion second hand
- Bring your electric bill down by switching your energy! Use LED or electric-powered vehicles or ebikes
- Incorporate a more plant-based diet

- Set up recycling and/or compost collection at your workplace, school or home
- Walk, take public transit or ride an ebike rather than driving a gas guzzler vehicle
- Turn off the lights when they’re not needed
