Helmets are the single most important safety item for eBike riders in Canada — legally required in BC for all cyclists and proven to dramatically reduce the severity of head injuries in crashes.

Are helmets required by law for eBike riders in BC?

Yes — British Columbia's Motor Vehicle Act requires all cyclists (including eBike riders) to wear an approved helmet. The helmet must meet a recognised safety standard (CSA, CPSC, ASTM, or Snell). Failure to wear a helmet can result in a fine and may affect insurance claims after an accident.

What type of helmet should I wear on an eBike?

A standard cycling helmet meets the legal minimum for e-bikes under 32 km/h. For higher speeds or off-road riding, a full-face MTB helmet or e-bike specific helmet (with extended rear protection) provides additional coverage. MIPS technology (rotational impact protection) is recommended for any helmet over $100.

What helmet brands does EBikeBC carry?

EBikeBC carries helmets from EVO, Bern, Abus, and other quality brands in road, MTB, and urban commuter styles. All helmets sold meet Canadian safety certification requirements.

How do I fit a cycling helmet correctly?

A properly fitted helmet sits level on the head (two finger-widths above the eyebrows), with the chin strap adjusted so you can fit two fingers under it. Side straps should form a V-shape below the ear. Shake your head — the helmet should move with your head, not independently.

How often should I replace my cycling helmet?

Replace a helmet immediately after any impact that damages it, even if the damage is not visible. Undamaged helmets should be replaced every 3–5 years as foam and strap materials degrade over time with UV exposure and sweat, reducing their impact-absorbing effectiveness.
