eBike throttles provide on-demand motor power without pedalling — ideal for stop-and-go city traffic, hill starts, and riders who want the option to rest while still moving forward.

What types of eBike throttles are available?

Thumb throttles (push-button style) and twist throttles (motorcycle grip style) are the two primary types. Thumb throttles are the most common on Canadian e-bikes — they mount alongside existing brake levers and allow one-finger operation without releasing the handlebar grip.

Are eBike throttles legal in Canada?

Under Canada's federal PAB definition, e-bikes may include a throttle as long as the bike is also capable of pedal-only operation and the motor does not exceed 500W/32 km/h. Throttle-only e-bikes are generally classified as Class 2 devices and are permitted under federal PAB rules, though some provincial regulations may differ.

Can I add a throttle to a pedal-assist-only e-bike?

Yes — most ENVO controllers and many third-party controllers include a throttle input connector. Adding a compatible thumb throttle is a simple wiring task if the controller supports it. Verify your controller's throttle input before purchasing.

Does using the throttle drain the battery faster?

Yes — throttle-only riding at full power draws maximum motor current continuously, draining the battery significantly faster than mixed pedal-assist riding. For maximum range, use the throttle for starts and hills only, pedalling for the majority of the journey.

Are ENVO throttles waterproof?

ENVO thumb throttles are designed for all-weather use with sealed internals appropriate for BC's rain. Connector junctions should be protected with dielectric grease for long-term reliability in wet conditions.
